Item THE INHIBITION EFFECT OF THIAZINE COMPOUNDS TOWARDS THE CORROSION OF MILD STEEL IN SULPHURIC ACID MEDIA(Rasayan Journal of Chemistry, 2012-12) Hemapriya V; Parameswari K; Bharathy GThe inhibition effect of thiazines (AT, CBT & NBT) on mild steel corrosion in 1M sulphuric acid (H2SO4) was investigated by weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques. The result showed that corrosion rate was significantly decreased in presence of the inhibitors. The inhibiting action increases with the concentration of thiazine compounds to attain 99 % at 0.5mM of (AT). The increase in temperature leads to a decrease in the inhibition efficiency of the compounds in the temperature range 308-353K. Adsorption of thiazines on the mild steel surface in 1M H2SO4 obeyed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. EIS measurements showed an increase in charge transfer resistance (Rct) with concentration. Potentiodynamic polarization study showed that the inhibitors act as mixed type, controlling both the anodic and cathodic reactions. Surface analysis by SEM confirmed the formation of adsorbed protective layer of the inhibitor on the steel surface.Item INHIBITING EFFECTS OF BENZOTHIAZOLE AMINE SCHIFF BASES ON THE CORROSION OF MILD STEEL IN ACID ENVIRONMENT(International Journal of Recent Scientific Research, 2014-08) Hemapriya V; Parameswari K; Chitra SThe corrosion inhibition of mild steel in 1M H2SO4 solution by Benzothiazol-2-yl- benzylidene amine (BBA) & 2-(Benzothiazol-2-yliminomethyl)-phenol (BIP) has been studied by weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The experimental results showed that the inhibition efficiency increases with increasing inhibitor concentration but decreases with increasing temperature. The adsorption of inhibitors on the mild steel surface obeyed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Potentiodynamic polarization curves revealed that the compounds act as mixed type inhibitors. The impedance measurements showed a change in the charge transfer resistance and double layer capacitance indicating adsorption of inhibitors on the mild steel surface. Surface analysis of mild steel has been carried out using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with EDX and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Quantumchemical calculations have been performed and several quantum chemical indices were calculated in order to complement the experimental resultsItem SOYA BEAN OIL BASED POLYURETHANES FOR CORROSION INHIBITION OF MILD STEEL IN ACID MEDIUM(Taylor & Francis, 2015-11-13) Valarmathi E; Saranya J; Sounthari P; Parameswari K; Chitra SPolyurethanes synthesized from soya bean oil were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction and energy-dispersion X-ray analysis methods. Thermal stability of the polyurethanes was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis. The corrosion inhibition effect of polyurethanes on mild steel in 1 M H2SO4 was studied using weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy methods. The effect of temperature on the corrosion behaviour of mild steel was studied in the temperature range (303–333 K) with optimum inhibitor concentration. The adsorption of the inhibitors was found to obey the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. It was found that the inhibition efficiency increased with increase in concentration but decreased with increase in temperature. The associated activation energy and other thermodynamic parameters such as adsorption–desorption equilibrium constant (Kads), standard free energy of adsorption (ΔG◦ads), enthalpy of adsorption (ΔH◦ads) and entropy of adsorption (ΔS◦ads) were calculated to elaborate the corrosion inhibition mechanism. Surface morphology of the mild steel plate immersed in 1 M H2SO4 was characterized by SEM and AFM techniques.Item POLYESTER-BENTONITE CLAY COMPOSITE: SYNTHESIS, CHARACTERIZATION AND APPLICATION AS ANTICORROSIVE AGENT(Oriental Scientific Publishing Company, 2015-08-20) Chitra S; Sounthari P; Kiruthika A; Parameswari KNew polyester-bentonite clay composite was prepared and characterized by FTIR, TGA, SEM& XRD. The XRD and SEM studies are quite supportive of well dispersed polymer clay composite formation. The thermal stability of the polymer was significantly improved as indicated by TGA. The composite was evaluated for its inhibition performance for mild steel corrosion in 1M H2SO4 by weight loss, polarization and electrochemical impedance techniques. The studies reveal that the clay composite was an excellent adsorption type inhibitor and obeys Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Electrochemical studies showed that the polymer composite was a mixed inhibitor retarding both anodic metal dissolution and cathodic hydrogen evolution.Item BRANCHED POLYMERS AND THEIR APPLICATION IN CORROSION INHIBITION FOR MILD STEEL IN 1M H2SO4 MEDIUM(Oriental Scientific Publishing Company, 2014-12-25) Sounthari P; Kiruthika A; Saranya J; Parameswari K; Chitra SThe adsorption and corrosion inhibiting effect of branched polymers (BATP, BAAZ, BETP & BEAZ) on mild steel in 1M H2SO4 at 30±1˚C was investigated using gravimetric, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and potentiodynamic polarization techniques. The experimental findings revealed that BATP inhibited the corrosion reaction in the acid environment to greater extend compared to BAAZ, BETP and BEAZ. Impedance results indicate that the polymers were adsorbed on the metal/solution interface, while polarization data showed that the polymers behaved mostly as mixed-type inhibitors. Kinetic parameters (activation energy, pre-exponential factor, enthalpy of activation and entropy of activation) as well as thermodynamic parameters (enthalpy of adsorption, entropy of adsorption and Gibbs free energy) were calculated and discussed. Scanning electron microscopy technique was used to confirm the effectiveness of inhibition of mild steel in sulphuric acid medium.Item POLYESTER-TOBACCO COMPOSITE: A NOVEL ANTICORROSION MATERIAL FOR MILD STEEL IN ACID MEDIUM(American Scientific Publishers, 2014-12-01) Sounthari P; Kavitha T; Kiruthika A; Saranya J; Chitra S; Parameswari K; Yuvaraj HA novel anticorrosion material polyester/tobacco (PES-TOB) composite was prepared via. ultra sonication method. The composite was characterized by FT-IR, TGA and XRD. In this report, we present the comparative corrosion inhibition performance on mild steel in 1 M H2SO4 containing PES and PES-TOB composite. The PES was prepared by condensation of 2,5-bis(4′-aminophenyl-N,N′-(3′-hydroxyphenylazo)-1,3,4-oxadiazole and pimelic acid. The synthesized PES showed only inhibition efficiency up to 38% at 500 ppm. But the corrosion protection performance of the PES-TOB composite was excellent upto 96%, which was monitored by weight loss method, potentiodynamic polarization method, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and AAS. The surface morphology was examined by scanning electron microscopy.Item POLYESTER CLAY COMPOSITE: PREPARATION AND CHARACTERIZATION(Research and Reviews, 2014-06) Kiruthika A; Sounthari E; Parameswari K; Chitra SIn the field of nanotechnology, polymer matrix based nano composites have become a prominent area of current research and development. By inserting the nanometric inorganic compounds, the properties of polymers improve and hence this has a lot of applications depending upon the inorganic material present in the polymers. Synergistic improvements in the composite properties were achieved and are superior to those of the individual components. Keeping this view in mind, we have synthesized novel polyester - MMT Clay composite. The polymer has been synthesized by condensation of a synthesized diol with diacid chloride. The synthesized polymers and composites were characterized by infrared spectra, proton magnetic spectra, scanning electron microscope, thermogravimetry and X-ray diffraction analysis. The results indicate that silicate layers are intercalated in the polyester matrix. The polymer composite is found to be crystalline and dense. The thermal stability of the novel hybrid material is higher compared to that of polymerItem 1,3,4-OXADIAZOLE DIMERS: NEW AND EFFECTIVE CORROSION INHIBITORS FOR MILD STEEL IN SULPHURIC ACID SOLUTION(Council for Innovative Research, 2014-05-30) Sounthari P; Kiruthika A; Saranya J; Parameswari K; Chitra SThe corrosion inhibition property of 1,3,4-oxadazoledimers have been investigated for mild steel in acidic environment using gravimetric method, Tafel polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS), scanning electron microscope(SEM), atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) and adsorption isotherm.
