Item ROLE OF MICRO FINANCE INSTITUTIONS IN ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT(ICMRR Publications, 2015-02) S, Radhika; S, DharchanaMicrofinance is gradually emerging as one of the most effective strategies to promote entrepreneurship. It can effectively generate employment and sustain the income of the households by giving them opportunities of work. During the past 25 years, the microfinance movement has challenged the conventional financial sector. Today the microfinance is very much in the agenda of public policy and it has been increasingly used as a vehicle to reach entrepreneurial goals. Microfinance in India is represented by Self Help Group(SHGs) which are linked to banks mainly women as its members. Microfinance is the provision that provides access to various financial services such as credit, savings, micro insurance, remittances, leasing to low-income clients including consumers and the self employed, who traditionally lack access to banking and related services. Entrepreneurship is a wise answer to solve the unemployment, migration and to promote economic and social development in rural areas. The strengthening of the rural villages will encourage the preservation of natural resources and improve the rural economy. There exist a wide gap between rural and urban areas in terms of infrastructure, market and financial access. To reduce the disparities, revitalizing the rural economy can be achieved by establishing entrepreneurial ventures in rural areas. Rising rural incomes will have a multiplier effect by raising the demand for farm and non-farm products and services instigating growth of employment opportunities. Government of India has been continuously assigning increasing importance and support for the promotion and growth of rural entrepreneurship. The obstacles for growth of rural entrepreneurship are literacy, risk aversion, lack of skilled labour, less technical knowhow, limited access to essential services, lack of communication facilities. Women entrepreneurs create new jobs for themselves and others and also provide society with different solutions to management, organization and business problems. However, they still represent a minority of all entrepreneurs. Women entrepreneurs often face gender-based barriers to starting and growing their businesses, like discriminatory property, matrimonial and inheritance laws and/or cultural practices; lack of access to formal finance mechanisms; limited mobility and access to information and networks, etc. Women’s entrepreneurship can make a particularly strong contribution to the economic well-being of the family and communities, poverty reduction and women’s empowerment, thus contributing to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
