Item SYTHESIS AND CHARACTRIZATION OF CHITOSAN BIOPOLYMER(Kongunadu Arts and Science College, Coimbatore, 2019-09-19) Thilagavathi P; Sharmila C; Ranjith Kumar R; Chandrashekar BChitin is one of the most abundant natural polysaccharides and it is mainly used for the production of chitosan by a de-acetylation process. Chitosanis a biopolymer used as a packing material in food industry. Chitosan biopolymer is an effective material, due to its functional properties such as antibacterial activity, non-toxicity and biodegradability. The main objective of the study focuses on the synthesis and characterization of the chitosan biopolymer. The chitosan is synthesized by wet chemical synthesis method. The absorbance characteristic was studied by UV visible spectroscopic technique. The crystallinity of the material was confirmed by X-ray diffraction technique. The morphological structure of the polymer sheet was confirmed by SEM analysis. The mechanical strength of the chitosan bio-polymer was analyzed by Tensile and Tear techniques and from the result it is observed that the elongation% and force of biopolymer sheet is about 117% and 1.12 N.Item SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF AG-DS BIOPOLYMER COMPOSITES(Anna University Chennai, 2019-01-03) Sharmila C; Dinesh M; Chandarshekar BChitosan (CS) biopolymer was added with low loading silver (Ag) metal nanoparticles to form Ag-CS biopolymer composite. Chitosan is a very promising biopolymer because it is environmental friendly due to its biodegradability and is degraded by enzymes in human body without any toxic effect. The major concern of the study focuses on the synthesis and characterization of the biopolymer composite. Different characterization techniques like X-ray Diffraction Analysis (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopic analysis (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) along with Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis (EDAX) and UV Spectroscopic analysis, was employed to analyze the nature of the biopolymer composite. The antibacterial activity of the biopolymer composite was also studied.
