Their income and spending capacity are critical to the country's economic well-being. Most of the corporate companies hire men for the top positions. The fundamental structure of patriarchal society depends upon the understanding that male are superior, more powerful, and that they represent the “norm,” whereas women are considered as inferior; they lack in power and autonomy. The power of socialization that underlies this system cannot be ignored. In fact, gender related patriarchal values are so deeply ingrained in society's consciousness that they are largely invisible. Thus, women are more likely than men to encounter negative expectations and reactions, making it more difficult for them to reach positions of respect, influence, and leadership. The diasporans migrate to different countries across the globe in search of greener pastures. Wherever they go, they take with them a profound sense of home land (native land) with them. Either they have gone there for economic settlement or permanent settlement, they have their roots in their native land. They are highly patriotic towards their mother land. These diasporans are called as first generation immigrants. They have split souls and they try to etch a space for themselves. But on the other hand their children, called as second generation immigrants could not confront with reality and they refuse to accept their parents as their saviors in their diasporic sickness. Birvarate analysis reveal that while the increased monthly income and availability of surviving children are likely to encourage the older people to co-reside with their own children, irrespective of marital status, higher occupational status of the elderly reduces the co-residence with children among widowed. The logistic regression analysis highlighted that women with higher monthly family income, not working, suffering with physical disability and belong to lower caste tend to increase the probability of living with children. On the other hand, the tendency to live with children among the currently married elderly women has increased with the availability of son and their level of education.Item MATE SELECTION AND FEMALE AGE AT MARRIAGE: A MICRO LEVEL INVESTIGATION IN TAMIL NADU, INDIA(Journal of Comparative Family Studies, 2003) Sheela J; Audinarayana NThis paper aims to examine the process of mate selection in determining the age at marriage of 600 ever-married women drawn from rural (300) and urban (300) areas of Salem district, Tamil Nadu. Results based on the Multiple Classification Analysis show that both in rural and urban areas, time taken to initiate marriage process after menarche, caste background, age difference between bride and bridegroom and consultation of women for their marriage have played a greater role in determining their age at marriage in that order. Further, in urban areas, consanguinity has exhibited a highly significant effect on their age at marriage. While the role of payment of dowry has some effect on age at marriage of women both in rural and urban areas, the practice of horoscope matching has such an effect only in rural areas. Contrary to the expectation, first-born daughters enter into matrimony comparatively at higher ages than their later-bom counterparts only in rural areas. Participation implies participation at all stages of the programme, viz., planning, formulation, implementation, decision-making, sharing the benefits of development, monitoring and evaluation. The development of human resources particularly women have been neglected/denied. Educational backwardness is the major reason why women lag behind men. Moreover, women in India experience unacceptable levels of violence in the family within the community, work place, public places and at the custodial institutions. It is the manifestation of the historically unequal power relations between men and women, which have lead to domination over and discrimination against women and the prevention of women's full advancement
